APPRENTICESHIPS - SKILLED LABOR
The Detroit Labs Apprenticeship Program is a three-month paid immersive training experience in software development, mobile development, and quality assurance engineering. Apprentices receive hands-on training, work side-by-side with Detroit Labs team members, and gain experience in all aspects of software creation.

Anyone with need additional career assistance, I would recommend they visit/work with their local Michigan Works Office. Keep in mind, that many employers still fill Apprenticeship positions with incumbent staff. It is important for anyone seeking work that they understand they may need to start in an entry level position and prove themselves before the organization will make a long term commitment such as apprenticeship to an employee. While some Apprenticeships currently being developed in IT/Technology are shorter, most still are 3-5 years in length.
Oakland County Workforce Development has produced an Apprenticeship Book that provides valuable information including an overview of apprenticeships and 60 different occupations. Within each of these, are contact information pertaining to community colleges and/or labor organizations that provide curriculum and/or apprenticeship opportunities. Many times there may not be an apprenticeship currently available, but individuals interested in a particular career path can start taking some classes that can be counted towards an apprenticeship should they connect to one at a later date. In addition, these courses will make them more marketable within their field of interest.
USDOL Apprenticeship Finder Tool: This page will provide an opportunity for an individual to search by zip code and occupation for area labor organizations and/or companies that currently hold standards for a registered apprenticeship. It does not mean they currently have openings but it will let an individual know where they can inquire about possible opportunities for now and in the future.
MAT2: the Michigan Advanced Technician Training Program – is an innovative, industry-driven approach to education. MAT² addresses two critical issues facing the manufacturing industries: a widening skills gap and an aging workforce. This initiative functions similar to an apprenticeship program, where students alternate between classroom instruction and on-the-job training, gaining the necessary hands-on skills and real-world experiences for them to become a successful and productive member of the workforce. Starting in 2016, MANY of the participating companies have worked to convert these opportunities to USDOL Registered Apprenticeships.
MITradeSchool.org: Another tool developed by Oakland County Workforce Development to help parents/students learn more about good-paying, interesting, in-demand jobs that do not necessarily require a 2 or 4 year post-secondary education. Many of these may be tied to apprenticeships.
www.Going-Pro.com: Another resource developed by the State. Similar to Oaklands tool, providing the ability to research varies occupations.
Pure Michigan Talent Connect: Many employers utilize the State’s labor exchange system (job posting board) to promote their current job openings, including Apprenticeships. You can use the job search function and simply search the word Apprentice to see what employers in the area are currently seeking to fill apprenticeship opportunities in their organizations.
Michigan Apprenticeship Resource Directory Each county in Michigan has an assigned Apprenticeship Success Coordinator who can help people locate an apprenticeship in a variety of skilled labor fields. That could be anything from being an electrician,to plumbing, to pipe fitting, to health care services. Many skilled labor jobs are best learned with on the job training.
An apprenticeship is a paid training program that leads directly into employment in the field of training. It's now called Work Based Learning. It's often done in conjunction with
a community college or other education institution.

DETROIT - SUMMER JOBS FOR YOUTH
Grow Detroit's Young Talent is a program that offers summer jobs (20 hrs per week for 6 weeks) to Detroit teens ages 14-24.
GDYT Jobs placements are based on a developmentally appropriate, tiered model for summer employment:
Tier 1: Career Exploration – The Career Exploration tier introduces young people to first-time work and career opportunities through community service, team projects, and job shadowing. This tier is for youth with little to no previous work experience (typically 14-16 year olds).
Tier 2: Ready for Work – Developed for young people with some previous work experience, the Ready for Work tier places youth with a host employer or in a vocational training experience, while continuing to build career readiness skills. (typically 16-24 year olds).
Tier 3: Career Pathway Internships – The competitive Career Pathways Internship tier is for
young people with previous work experience and a desire to focus on a specific career pathway with a host employer (17 years or older).

EMPLOYMENT FOR RETURNING CITIZENS
Community Ventures Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC)
Community ventures provides employment help for some of the state's most vulnerable populations. That includes ex-offenders returning to the job market.
In Detroit the program is run by Goodwill Industries Flip the Script program (see below) and Ser Metro.
In Pontiac the services are provided by Oakland Livingsotn Human Services Agency (OLSA)
In Flint the mentoring is done through Mott Community College and St. Luke's New Life Center.
You start with those agencies and get both a referral and mentor through them. They will refer you to Michigan Work's as a Community Ventures Client for the employment help.
Goodwill Industry's Flip the Script Men's Empowerment Program
This program is for Wayne County only. It is a holistic approach that help young men transition back to life and helps with career development as well.

HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS:
- College Bound Career Ready This is a program that allows high school students to pursue job training and basic college courses on a part-time basis during their junior and senior years. The program aims to prepare students for immediate employment after graduation, and/or to enter college without having to take basic or remedial courses.
- Information Technologies Center (ITC). Focus: HOPE’s highly-regarded Information Technologies Center provides training for industry certifications. Students can enroll in classes ranging from 12.5 weeks to 53 weeks to develop credentials to launch successful careers in the IT industries. Depending on the program, students can earn certifications in Microsoft Office Specialist, Certified Business Professional Customer Service Support, Comp TIA A+, Cisco Certified Network Administrator and other areas.
- Machinist Training Institute (MTI). Our new 12-week machinist training program provides hands-on training to become a machine operator. It also provides an introduction to computerized applications such as CNC operations. Click here to download flyer.
- Ready, Set, Go! This skill enhancement program helps students upgrade math and reading skills through concentrated study. Small classes, tutoring and personal attention help students improve test scores by as much as two grades in 10 weeks. Students also learn study skills and work readiness skills.
- Earn and Learn. This new program provides access to jobs for at-risk minority youth and adults who have been incarcerated or are chronically unemployed. It targets residents of Detroit, Highland Park and Hamtramck. Students take four weeks of job readiness training before being placed in part-time jobs. - GED Prep. The Education Experience GED Tutoring program assists adults ages 18 and older earn their GED through tutoring and personal assistance.
- Center for Advanced Technologies (CAT). Students can earn a college degree in engineering through this unique collaboration with university and industry partners. Students get hands-on work experience through internships and in our manufacturing area where we conduct research and development for the U.S. government.
- Information Management and Systems Engineering (IMSE). Our dynamic college degree program combines information technology and business courses to produce well-rounded IT professionals.
Michigan Back to work (AARP)
Openings are available in Michigan for a job-training program for low-income people age 55 and older. Administered by AARP Foundation through a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) pays minimum wage for work-based training. Participants typically work 18-20 hours a week in community service positions at day care and senior centers, schools, government agencies, hospitals and libraries. Job can last up to 48 months. Offers senior citizens a meaningful life in retirement through volunteer service that is responsive to community needs. RSVP provides opportunities for persons age 55 and older to serve on a regular basis in a variety of settings throughout their communities. RSVP is available in 42 of Michigan's 83 counties. RSVP functions under the auspices of an established community service organization with funding, support, and technical assistance from the Corporation for National Service, the State of Michigan, and the local community. The Deaf Blind Unit of the Michigan Commission for the Blind
Provides statewide Vocational Rehabilitation services and/or Independent Living consultation to adults and high school students who are legally blind and have moderate to profound hearing loss. Referrals for services for Deaf/Blind individuals may come from a variety of sources including family members, friends, physicians, the Social Security Administration, employers, other professionals or the individual him/herself.

Ticket to Work
A program that offers Social Security Administration (SSA) disability benficiaries greater choice in obtaining the support and services they need to help them go to work and achieve their employment goals. The program is designed to assist people with the training and support they need to go to work by increasing their choices. Social Security beneficiaries with disabilities can find employment, vocational rehabilitation and other support services from public and private providers including the Michigan Commission for the Blind. Participants must be age 18 or older and have not reached age 65. This program is VOLUNTARY! When a person is participating in this program, no Social Security Medical Continuing Disability Reviews take place, as long as the beneficiary demonstrates they are making "timely progress" and/or working to meet the goals identified in their "Ticket to Work" plan.

The Detroit Midtown Micro-enterprise Fund Corporation
The Detroit Micro-enterprise Fund provides micro-loans to under served sole proprietorship’s and small business enterprises who do not have access to traditional commercial bank financing in the cities of Detroit, Highland Park, Hamtramck, Ecorse, Lincoln Park, River Rouge and Pontiac Michigan. The micro loans available range from a minimum of $1,000.00 to a maximum of $10,000.00 for new businesses and up to $25,000.00 for established businesses.

This is a financing program available to women entrepreneurs and small business owners. It is often difficult for newly formed but promising businesses to obtain financing; the Michigan Women's Microloan Fund is designed to meet that need.
