    APPRENTICESHIPS - SKILLED LABOR

    The Detroit Labs Apprenticeship Program is a three-month paid immersive training experience in software development, mobile development, and quality assurance engineering. Apprentices receive hands-on training, work side-by-side with Detroit Labs team members, and gain experience in all aspects of software creation.
     
    Work Based Learning
    Each county in Michigan has an assigned Apprenticeship Success Coordinator who can help people locate an apprenticeship in a variety of skilled labor fields. That could be anything from being an electrician,to plumbing, to pipe fitting, to health care services.  Many skilled labor jobs are best learned with on the job training. 

    An apprenticeship is a paid training program that leads directly into employment in the field of training.  It's now called Work Based Learning.  It's often done in conjunction with
    a community college or other education institution.

    Detroit Promise
    The Detroit Promise, administered by the Detroit Regional Chamber, ensures that any Detroit-resident student graduating from a high school in the city of Detroit will have a tuition-free path to an associate degree, technical certificate**, or bachelors degree at any one of five participating community colleges or 17 four-year universities.     Nine learning labs are scattered around the city to provide adults 19 and older free educational opportunities to prepare them for further education and for the workplace. 


    Detroit Learning Labs are:

    Customized: Learning Labs are flexible, offering online learning that is tailored to the needs, goals, and pace of each participant.

    Neighborhood-based: Each Learning Lab is operated through a trusted local agency where learners can find additional support, including one-on-one tutoring, counseling for training and job skills, and help solving problems that can interfere with learning or work.

    City-wide: All of the Detroit Learning Labs are connected, so learners can use any of the locations at any time.

    Accessible: Each Learning Lab location is easily accessible with extended operating hours to ensure that learners are able to access services regardless of work and life constraints.

    MARYGROVE COLLEGEStudent Support Services
    Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program that assists students in developing and strengthening the academic skills that are essential to success at Marygrove.     1. Girl's Literacy Programs
    The Girls’ Literacy and Life Skills (LLS) Tutoring Program provides one-to-one remedial tutoring in reading and math to improve academic outcomes for girls in 1st through 8th grade living in southwest Detroit. Tutors include certified teachers, retired teachers, and trained volunteers. Girls receive assistance with reading, math, homework, computer literacy, creative expression, and appropriate social interaction. LLS also provides academic support, homework assistance, computer instruction, ACT test preparation, ACT-focused alternative spring break and college readiness for girls in grades 9-12.

    The Women’s Programs improve women’s educational advancement by providing literacy, adult basic education, GED preparation and selected career and workforce development services.

    GED Prep classes M - Th 10 am - noon and 3 pm - 5 The GED classes are FREE.
    They also provide tutoring for all ages - elementary through college classes. There are 52 locations throughout Metro Detroit. Tutoring services are free, there is a one time fee of $10 for a reading assessment. Tutors and students meet at libraries, churches, and community centers throughout Metro Detroit.

    Do you know an adult who needs help reading? They are not alone. There are 30 million adults who can’t read well enough to understand a newspaper article or fill out a job application in this country.

    The Westland Public Library is offering FREE 1-on-1 tutoring with trained literacy volunteers. Learners must commit to meeting with their tutor once a week for two hours at a time that is convenient for them inside one of the library’s meeting rooms. This service is completely confidential.

    Wayne Metro’s LEAPS Program is a family literacy program offered to income-eligible parents and their children ages six months to 8 years old. The LEAPS Program helps parents strengthen the literacy and parenting skills they need to help their children reach their full capacity as learners.

    LEAPS is modeled after the high quality and comprehensive family literacy services established under the agency's previous Even Start Program. In 2012, Wayne Metro received a grant from the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy to implement this program and offer GED and ESL classes to low-income families. The LEAPS program offers comprehensive and integrated services, including:
    Parents As Learners:
    General Education Development (GED) preparation, Adult Basic Education (ABE), and English as a Second Language (ESL)
    Small class sizes
    Life Skills and Employment Training Opportunities
    Monthly, individualized home visits
    Family goal setting
